Resumen: This dissertation examines the dynamic relationship between time, space, and history to elucidate the role of monumental architecture in the production and representation of elite authority and identity at the site of Tiwanaku. Situated in the highlands of modern-day Bolivia, Tiwanaku was the capital of an expansive state that, during its apogee from aproximately A. d. 600 - 1000, was a dominant political adn ideological force in the southeern Andes.
